About GIY
GIY promotes health, wellbeing, communities and the environment by inspiring and supporting people to grow their own food.
We bring people together – in community groups and gardens, in schools, allotments and on-line - to grow food. By growing together and sharing tips and expertise, we are more likely to succeed than by growing alone.
There are approximately 10,000 people involved in the GIY movement and there are groups all over Ireland. GIY meetings are free and open to people interested in food growing at all levels.
Gift Membership
Do you have friends or family who are passionate about food, health, community and the environment? Why not buy them the gift of GIY membership?
They get to enjoy all the many benefits of being a GIY member, while your gift will have generously supported our work to make home-grown and local food the norm.
GIY Membership
GIY's vision is for a healthier, more sustainable and more connected world where people grow their own food.
Go to your local supermarket and chances are, what you will see on the shelves are imports of highly-processed, unseasonal produce - broccoli from Kenya, carrots from Guatemala and so on. The way the food chain currently operates has serious implications for our health, community, the environment, the economy and Irish jobs. So, what’s the solution? Write an angry letter? Lobby a politician? At GIY we believe that change begins with the decision to sow a seed. Home-grown food impacts people's lives, communities and the environment. If we can encourage enough people to grow their own vegetables, we can have a lasting impact on the food chain and bring some common sense back in to our relationship with food.
How your Support Makes a Difference
GIY is about transforming people's lives, communities and the environment by supporting people to grow their own food. As well as encouraging and supporting people to grow their own food , we run a number of “GIY in the Community” outreach projects, promoting and facilitating:
- GIY Community Groups – bringing GIYers together so they support each other and share tips, expertise and knowledge. There are already over 100 GIY community groups and up to 10,000 people involved in the movement.
- SchoolVegetable Gardens– introducing the next generation of GIYers to the joys of home-grown food.
- Allotments and Community Gardens– availability of growing space is a key issue for many GIYers. The GIY Plot Partners project links those who need land with those who have it to give.
- Through the “Learn, Sow and Show” programme, GIY reaches out at events to get people to sow a seed and encourage them to show 5 others to do the same.
