Today we transferred a few plants into our raised bed and we got to sow a few rows of vegetables - carrots and salads. I also transferred some of my strawberry plants from the little pots they grew in since they were runners - I am so looking forward to a nice bowl of cereals with homegrown strawberries!
Having finished our work in the garden we went inside - and after a few minutes I was alre...

When I went into my garden the last few days I kept stumbling over one nice surprise after the other.
The first was when Manoah found my bluebell bulbs in our raised bed (which had been topped up with top soil by our builder friend, when he dug up a patch for the foundation for our shed) - the soil had been thrown into the raised bed and I was happy to find the bulbs - which I had feared had g...

had the day off today so headed off to the plot for a few hours in the sunshine. I tell you it put a smile on my face, I didn't do a whole lot and enjoyed a lot of 'empty head time', just sitting in the fresh air, thinking about....nothing. It was lovely to see all the green of the plants in the beds rather than the brown of the soil. Gave the beds a quick hoeing, earthed up the early ...

I haven't used the giyireland.com web site much since it was re-designed a few months ago. I found it awkward to navigate around the web site for the following reason:
When I logged on to the home page there are 11 "Table of Contents" key words acroos the top of the page - "Home", "About Us", "Forum" etc. Most of these have "drop down" menus which appear when the cursor is hovere...

We had a lot of planting to do today - we moved our first batch of lettuce into the raised bed, along with the peas and runner beans. This freed up some pots to move our next batch of smaller lettuce seedlings into. We constructed the support for our runner beans and peas and put these into the raised bed also. We planted some radish seeds directly into the raised bed, not sure i...

Today we started May's project. I took the my two older kids with me to the shop to get the plastic window box and the seeds. My neighbour, Mick had some stones so we used those for the bottom of the box. Mid -afternoon today the sun broke through, so we headed outside to get some compost and filled the box up until 5cm remained from the top.
Then we got our pencils and I made a shallow dril...

At last, the sun has shone for about 2 hours here in Cabinteely in Dublin, this evening and yesterday evening. I have put my seedlings out and it makes such a change from all the rain, they just look like they are enjoying it! My pots inside look splendid in the sunshine aswell. I have put some photos up in our photo album, that's how excited I am about the sunshine!

I can't ever remember eating cress before and when I read about creating "cress heads" I was both amused and wary. This is the first project we have received and I do not want to mess it up!
We decided that we should make four cress heads each and then another joint one as Lochlainn is too young to make his own so this fifth one would be to represent him. Once that was decided, we knew it me...

The wet weather has kept us indoors lately but in the meantime we have planted some herbs in pots in our utility room. I always use herbs when cooking but mainly dried ones and really only buy fresh herbs when they are reduced in price. Everytime in teh past that I have reached for the dried variety I have told myself that I must start growing my own. My older brother has encouraged me to do so on...

Hi All,
Have been a bit slow starting off. Not on the gardening side but getting used to the website & this whole idea of blogging!! This is a first for me in many ways:
I have relatively no gardening experience and my any previous attempt of growing flowers or shrubs has failed. (Hopefully my mother in law won't be reading this, but sorry Mary, all those cute little trees you...

When this year started 5 months ago, I said I would experiment with early planting in my green, hobby tunnel, which is known as the "Sheebeen". Did Mother Nature hear me and decide, noooo...Catherine is not going to get the better of me!!
I thought I could, but new that I shouldn't tempt fate, but that is what we passionate gardeners tend to do anyway. There is no telling us!
I think I start...

This weather is so bad, when it hasn't been raining lately it has been freezing cold and windy. How can we expect our little seeds to sprout when we don't feel like going outdoors ourselves? I have had to bring a lot of our seeds indoors, even inside the mini greenhouse is not warm enough, I suppose you need a heated glasshouse when it is this cold. So here's hoping i...

As a follow up to last yesterday evening's post I had this nagging urge to investigate..............I couldn't resist it. Admittedly it is only a handful and patience would be virtuous but there will be more.

Well, after another day of cold and rain I laced up my boots and headed for the greenhouse and poly-tunnel to lock up for the night. Even on dull, cool days I like to open the doors slightly to let air circulate and allow any brave pollinating insects to wander in and "do their thing". Strawberries (Christine) are in flower and mishapen fruit are a common sympton of poor pollination ...........and...

I am really thankful yesterday's weather was not like today - it was sunny and quite mild. I told my boys to get ready for our first get-together with the local GiY-group. Our project was to build a bean-teepee. When my oldest heard that, he was not really impressed at first (he would have preferred a real teepee, haha!), but then he decided to pack a few things that might come in handy (like ...

The Limerick GIY group got together with Mid West Spina Bifida to raise awareness of the importance of Folic acid in our diets by sowing Folic acid vegetables in the community garden of Mid West Spina Bifida.
During GIY Week, on the 15th of April - Volunteers from Limerick GIY completed some garden maintenance to tidy up the garden and clean away last year's growth. Wheel-cha...
